Exteriors on a Barrier Island Measured in Yards, Not Miles

Indian Shores is barely a few hundred yards wide in places — a slender run of Gulf Boulevard between Indian Rocks Beach and Redington Shores where nearly every property is either Gulf-front, Intracoastal-front, or within a block of both. There is no such thing as a sheltered exterior here. Salt spray reaches every roof, sun hammers unshaded west elevations from noon to sunset, and when tropical systems move up the coast, this island takes wind loads that inland Pinellas neighborhoods never see. Building exteriors that survive that environment is specialized work, and it is what Alpine Exteriors has done for 25 years.

What Coastal-Grade Actually Means

Roofing for direct Gulf exposure

On the island we favor standing-seam aluminum and high-wind-rated shingle systems installed over fully sealed decks. Aluminum matters within a quarter mile of the beach: standard galvanized steel roofing corrodes visibly within a decade here. Sealed decks and enhanced attachment also translate into wind-mitigation insurance credits — no small thing given what coastal Pinellas owners now pay for coverage.

Impact windows and doors

Many Indian Shores cottages and elevated homes from the 1970s and 80s still carry original aluminum-frame windows that are pitted, sticky, and single-pane. Impact-rated replacements end shutter drills, tame the constant Gulf wind noise, and cut cooling loads in rooms that face the afternoon sun over the water.

Cladding that ignores salt

Fiber cement and marine-tolerant vinyl are the only siding materials we recommend this close to the Gulf, always with stainless fasteners. Wood trim on the beach side of the island is a maintenance treadmill; we replace it with materials that do not care about spray.

  • Aluminum and high-wind roofing systems engineered for beachfront exposure
  • Impact window and slider replacement for cottages, stilt homes, and townhomes
  • Salt-immune siding and trim fastened with stainless hardware
  • Insurance documentation for wind-mitigation inspections and credits

Island Logistics, Handled

Working on a narrow island brings practical challenges — tight lots, limited staging, beach-parking pressure near the old Tiki Gardens access, and town permitting requirements distinct from unincorporated Pinellas. With more than 2,000 projects behind us, we plan deliveries and dumpsters so your neighbors stay friendly and the job keeps moving.

We also schedule around the realities of island life: sea-turtle season lighting considerations on the Gulf side, and the vacation-rental calendar that many owners depend on. A shoulder-season vacancy in the fall is often the ideal moment to knock out a roof or window package without costing a single booking.

Every installation carries our 25-year workmanship warranty, which we can honor because we build for this environment rather than adapting inland habits to it. If your roof, windows, or siding are showing the island's wear, we will meet you at the property, document conditions honestly, and provide a free estimate — whether it is a weekend cottage or your year-round home above the dune line.
